As electricians, we get asked lots of questions on a daily basis! Hopefully our short blog post will help answer some of the questions we get asked.
Q. Do I need to sign off my electrics?
A. Any electrical work completed should be inspected and tested, with a certificate produced by the electrician who has completed the work (Even minor work should be tested and certificated for). Under Part P of the current building regulations; any new circuit, consumer unit, or any addition or alteration in a special location E.g. Bathroom, needs to be submitted by a PART P compliant electrician to the local housing authority. Lastly, an electrician is able to “sign-off” other people’s work, but you may find that most electricians won’t be willing to do this, as they will not want to put their name to the installation.
Q. How can I save money on my bills?
A. The most inexpensive way to save energy (and money!) is to replace all of your lamps (or “bulbs”) with new LED, energy efficient alternatives. If you do the maths, just by replacing your bulbs you will cut down the amount of energy used drastically! If you’re thinking of having more extensive electrical work completed, it may be worth thinking of other ways you can save energy; by limiting the number of light fittings you have installed. For example: Through smart design, you can limit the amount of spot lights you have installed in the ceiling whilst still achieving a well-lit room! If you have 8 spot lights recessed in a ceiling, you could allow for the switch to control 4 spot lights each, allowing for you to have half of the room lit at a time. Dimmer switches are also a fantastic way to reduce energy costs, by limiting the amount of energy a bulb consumes. It does this through a triac switch, which cuts the flow of power to the lamp up to hundreds of times a second. By doing this lots of times a second, it is unnoticeable to the human eye. DIMMERS DO SAVE! Dimming your lights an average of 50 percent can cut your electric use a massive 40 percent over time, and make your bulbs last 20 times longer!
Q. How long does a re-wire take?
A. The time it takes to rewire a property ultimately depends on:
- Is the property going to be empty during the work?
- How big is the property?
- The specification of the work?
We complete standard specification rewires to average 3 bedroom properties (if empty) in around 3 days. If the property is occupied with furniture, and is going to be lived in, the work can take 5-7 days. This is due to the amount of time it takes to clean up, make the electrics safe/partially usable & move back furniture at the end of every day. When quoted for a rewire whilst you are living at the property, ask if they’ll reduce the price if you were to vacate the property for a few days! You never know, you mind find it’s worth doing so!
Q. When will I receive my certificate and PART P compliance confirmation?
A. We aim to get EICRS (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) – Also known as land lord certificates, within 24 hours of completion of the test & inspection. With regards to EICS (Electrical Installation Certificates) and Minor works certificates; we aim to get a electronic copy emailed to you within 21 days of completion. When completing some types of work it’s necessary to submit a work notification submission to the local housing authority. We do this upon completion, but can take approximately 30 days for you (the client) to receive a confirmation certificate via post. Please note that on average we submit the certificates to the clients much quicker than the times listed above!
